This ingenious grandmother’s trick is enough to preserve potatoes without sprouting them
Potatoes are available all year round. But it often happens to buy a large quantity and not be able to consume them immediately. In fact, this ingenious grandmother’s trick is enough to preserve potatoes without sprouting them.
As soon as we get home, we remove the plastic bag and place our tubers inside a jute bag (which allows good air circulation). Alternatively we use baskets or cardboard boxes. Of course, we eliminate the bruised potatoes that could sprout quickly and ruin the others. Now we keep the potatoes in a cool, dark, not too dry place with a temperature below 10 degrees. Also, let’s make sure there is good ventilation.
Before storing the potatoes we avoid washing them, because the humidity could cause mold and cause our tubers to rot immediately.
Now, to prevent potatoes from sprouting quickly, we can use aromatic herbs. In fact, some essential oils contained in sage and rosemary leaves can delay the formation of buds.
How to do? We put the leaves of these aromatic herbs inside a bag and place it between the potatoes. This method will prolong their storage.
Then we just have to check, every 2 or 3 weeks, our tubers to eliminate the rotten ones.
In addition to the trick just described, we can also use this method recommended in a previous article “Few people know that this fruit that we all have at home can help preserve potatoes and keep them from sprouting”.
