Salt Lake, USA.- A Utah man has been arrested on charges of causing a forest fire when he tried to burn a spider with his lighter.
Cory Allan Martin, 26, told police he saw the spider Monday when he was walking through an area in the hills near the town of Springville, south of Salt Lake City, according to a probable cause statement. He acknowledged starting the fire but did not say why he was trying to burn the chandelier.
Cops found a container of marijuana among his belongings, Utah County Sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Cannon said.
There is no evidence to indicate he intentionally set the fire, Cannon said, but he described his decision as reckless and confused. The area and most of the state suffer from extreme drought conditions.
“What led him to stop and notice a spider and decide to burn it… we don’t know,” Cannon said. “There might not be a why. Maybe he doesn’t even know why.”
Martin was arrested on suspicion of negligent burning and possession of marijuana and drug-related paraphernalia, court documents say.
He was being held in the Utah County Jail on nearly $2,000 bond. It is unknown if he has a lawyer.
The fire quickly spread up the mountain and had burned 1.5 square kilometers by Tuesday, according to fire officials. No houses had been damaged.
