Mastodon works decentrally

Mastodon is basically free to use. The service has existed since 2016 and works on a donation basis. While tweets are limited to 280 characters, up to 500 characters can be shared in toots. The web interface is very similar to Twitter and allows texts, images and videos to be shared. A big difference is that there are several different timelines. Since Mastodon works decentrally, likes are not displayed directly. The servers are called instances and are operated by different organizations and private individuals. When logging in, users must choose an instance.

on mastodon more than five million user accounts have been created so far. Since Twitter has over 390 million accounts, the service can be considered a comparatively small social network. Of course, it remains to be seen how the numbers will develop in the coming weeks. Many users should only use the alternative platform additionally and still remain active on Twitter.
