UEFA Champions League will have changes from the 2024 season

Through a statement, the UEFA announced that it approved changes in the format of the Champions League. This has been known since April 2021 and said modifications will be released from the Season 2024/25.

The group stage will become a League stage/stage that will include all participating clubs (36). Each club will be guaranteed a minimum of 8 league phase games (in the group phase there were 6 games) against 8 different rivals (4 home games and 4 away games).

So, in theory, the designation of the opponent in each round of the Champions League it will be done depending on the score at that time, like in chess. Example: on matchday 1, since everyone will have 0 points, anyone can play against anyone (draw);

While in day 2, there would be duels between the teams that have the same points; and so on. Basically it is to face rivals who have a level -marked by the points- similar to yours.

It is worth mentioning that although we are still waiting for more details and confirmations regarding this (UEFA has not clearly explained how exactly they will fit the Swiss system in the Champions League).

The first 8 of the League phase will qualify for the direct elimination rounds, while the teams that remain between 9th and 24th place will compete in a two-leg play-off to achieve their pass to the round of 16 (from here will be the 8 remaining tickets to the round of 16).

No change in direct elimination.

The knockout rounds will be round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final (stays the same). Qualification for the UEFA Champions League will remain open and will be won by a team’s performance in domestic competitions.

One of the additional places will be awarded to the third-placed club in the association championship that ranks fifth in the UEFA national association ranking.

Another place will be awarded to a national champion, increasing from 4 to 5 the number of clubs that qualify through the so-called champions route (in short: 1 extra ticket in the play-offs prior to the start of the League phase ).
