US Open 2022: open table for Nadal, Kyrgios on the road to Medvedev, two 100% French duels … What to remember from the men’s draw

The draw for the US Open 2022 men’s draw on Thursday August 25 placed world number 1 Daniil Medvedev, in the same part of the table as one of his main rivals for the title, Stefanos Tsitsipas (4th in the world). The French are not all varnished, like Benoit Paire who will face Cameron Norrie, the seeded n°7, in the first round.

One of the first shocks of this tournament will be the clash between the Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, seeded n°12 and very recent winner of his first Masters 1000 in Montreal, and Dominic Thiem (wild card), winner of the US Open 2020.

Two Tricolores are already guaranteed to play the second round. Quentin Halys (76th in the world) and Arthur Rinderknech (58th) will face each other in the first round for a 100% French duel. The winner will have a lot to do: he will find the world number 1, Daniil Medvedev (opposed to the American Stefan Kozlov), from the second round. The Russian inherits a full-bodied table: he could face the Australian Nick Kyrgios in the quarter-finals, then Tsitsipas in the half and finally Nadal in the final.

There will be another tricolor duel in this same quarter of the table. Benjamin Bonzi, best committed Frenchman (50th) will challenge Ugo Humbert (143rd). The winner of their clash could find Kyrgios, the No. 23 seed, in the second round.

For the other French people involved, the draw was a little more lenient: Hugo Gaston (71st) will face Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik (47th) while Adrian Mannarino (65th) will meet a player from qualifying.

Rafael Nadal for his part inherited an open table. The Spaniard, crowned at Roland-Garros this year despite his recurring heel pain, will start his tournament against Australian guest Rinky Hijikata (199th). He could find the French Richard Gasquet (91st) in the third round, if the latter defeats the Japanese Taro Daniel (95th).

On the other hand, Carlos Alcaraz will have to work. The Spaniard, 4th player in the world, will potentially find on his way Marin Cilic (n°17), Borna Coric (n°29) or even Hubert Hurckacz (n°10).
