Woody Allen surrounds himself with two stars of French cinema. Valérie Lemercier will play opposite Niels Schneider in the American filmmaker’s next film, which is due to start shooting next month in Paris.
As specified variety, which reports the information, the title and the scenario of this fiftieth film of Woody Allen are not yet known. The director simply said it would be similar to Match Point, a 2005 cartoon, and that it would be “exciting, dramatic and also very sinister”. It should be shot in French.
Valérie Lemercier’s latest film, Aline, benefited from an international reputation. Presented at the Cannes Film Festival 2021, this feature film inspired by the life of Celine Dion won a César for best actress for the actress last February. Niels Schneider, French-Canadian actor revealed in the first films of Xavier Dolan, recently shot in Sibyl alongside Virginie Efira and Adèle Exarchopoulos, and The things we say, the things we do by Emmanuel Mouret.
Accustomed to Europe
This new film will mark a return for Woody Allen to the French capital, eleven years later Midnight in Paris. The director had staged several stars of French cinema, in particular Marion Cotillard, Léa Seydoux and Gad Elmaleh. He has toured Europe many times, notably for Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Match Point, Scoop and last year Rifkin’s Festival. He staged the French actor Louis Garrel.
Woody Allen has repeatedly raised the possibility of retirement. After an ambiguous declaration on the possibility that this new film will be his last, his spokesperson denied the information at the beginning of the week, assuring that “for the moment, he has no intention” of abandoning the camera”.
