Victory of Ukraine: where can Eurovision be organized in 2023?

From our special correspondent in Turin (Italy). It is now a reality, Ukraine won the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. Their representatives – members of the Kalush Orchestra group and their song Stefania – benefited from a real surge of solidarity from the public, which enabled them to win at the end of the 66th edition, organized in Turin, Italy. As tradition dictates, the winner is logically in charge of organizing the following edition (note that after its second consecutive victory in 1979, Israel declined to organize the 1980 edition: The Hague, in the Bas, had therefore overseen the next competition). But now, the Russian-Ukrainian conflict continues, and it seems unrealistic today that Ukraine can host the Eurovision Song Contest 2023.

Ukraine wants to host Eurovision 2023

In a press conference, after the final, Oleh Psiuk, the leader of the musical formation, mentioned what does not seem to be a problem in his eyes. “I am sure that next year Ukraine will be happy to welcome Europe, in a new Ukraine“, he advanced. For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed this victory on his social networks, and announced that “next year, Ukraine will host theEurovision.“Martin Österdahl, the executive supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), symbolically handed over specifications to the head of Ukrainian delegation Oksana Skybinska, at the end of this same conference : the latter was already in post in 2016, during the previous victory of Ukraine, with the singer Jamala. She therefore knows the stakes of such an event.

“Unique Challenges”

Shortly after the end of the show, the EBU anticipated this question concerning the organization by issuing a press release. In the latter, the organization already indicates that it wants “start planning for 2023 with winning broadcaster UA:PBC (the Ukrainian public channel, Editor’s note).” But while also specifying that “Obviously, organizing next year’s competition presents unique challenges. As every year, we look forward to discussing all the requirements and responsibilities of hosting the competition with UA:PBC.

Could the organization be entrusted to another country?

In the case of an impossible organization in Ukraine, one of the solutions which could be envisaged would therefore be a co-production between Ukraine and a country which would be able to host the competition. According to the Swedish daily Aftonbladet, the city of Stockholm, which hosted the competition in 2016, would be ready to take charge of the 67th edition. Unless the United Kingdom, second in the general classification of Eurovision 2022, decides to apply as well?
