Virkus’ transfer outlook: So it goes on with Sommer, Thuram and Co.

The horror scenarios did not materialize at Borussia Mönchengladbach. For large parts of the summer it seemed as if the foals would have to give up numerous top performers. In the end, with Matthias Ginter (28) and Breel Embolo (25), only two of them said goodbye, Yann Sommer (33), Ramy Bensebaini (27) and Marcus Thuram (25) went into the last year of their contract, Alassane Plea (29) and Jonas Hofmann ( 30) extended even.

Sports director Roland Virkus (55) can be satisfied, especially since the team has come together well under new coach Daniel Farke (45) and is currently sixth. But for the 55-year-old, work doesn’t stop there. On the contrary: Many personal details are still open for the foals.

New offer for summer?

Gladbach is still trying to get an extension with summer. However, Virkus is not overly optimistic in an interview with ‘Sport Bild’: “There is a natural framework at Borussia. And although Yann has been an absolute pillar of this team for a long time, it has to be said that there are things in life that are not so easy to afford. We’d love to keep him and we’re in regular talks. Now we have to see: Can we get together?

Nevertheless, Virkus would like to fight for his regular keeper and says he is willing to invest financially “to stretch”. So will the three-year offer, which should have been available for some time in the summer, be changed again? virus: “We may have to reconsider giving a little more on the one hand and subtracting a little on the other.”

The sports director is also still campaigning for Thuram and Bensebaini to stay. “We would like to extend all players whose contracts expire next summer. Because they are top performers of this club”says Virkus, who concedes: “One will work, the other will not work. Because the players may also have other goals for themselves.”

Koné sale planned

One player who is on the sales list, at least in the medium term, is Manu Koné. The 55-year-old makes no secret of this: “I’d be lying if I said we’ll never sell him. There have already been requests for Manu. But we don’t have to sell him yet. Above all, we don’t want to sell it just yet.”

Virkus leaves open when that will change. However, he has already defined the framework conditions for a transfer: “The boy must want to take his next step. At a club that is significantly larger than Gladbach. And we have to be satisfied too.” One “Win-win situation”as the sports director describes it.

Weigl purchase option too high

Meanwhile, on the side of the newcomers, a permanent signing of loan player Julian Weigl is on the agenda – a difficult undertaking, because Borussia cannot pull the purchase option for 15 million euros. Virus open: “Such a sum would not be possible. It was like this: We gave Julian a clear perspective for this season, he gave up a lot. Thus, the loan was representable. I can’t say what will happen after that.”

Nevertheless, the sports director hopes: “Sometimes a player develops so much at a club that you find a new solution, because the player’s desire is so great that he stays. But of course Benfica has a say in that. If Julian develops well here, we will do everything we can to retain him in the long term.” There are busy months ahead of Virkus.
