Erling Haaland will play for Manchester City next season. The departure is made possible by an exit clause that the top striker had secured in 2020. Hans-Joachim Watzke has no illusions that such sales are part of Borussia Dortmund’s business.
“It’s the only way for us, because if a player performs very well, we have to fight against the really, really big clubs with the oligarchs and the Arab states at our backs.”explains the BVB managing director to ‘CNN’.
Continued focus on talent
BVB will therefore continue to focus on talent: “We can’t win that fight, but we can win a fight for an 18-year-old player like Jude Bellingham, because this player loves to play at Borussia Dortmund, because we always have 80,000 spectators, it’s a very good atmosphere and the club knows how to deal with young players.”
The development of talent remains Dortmund’s reason for the club. “We have a good department that scouts young players every day”, explains Watzke. But the most important thing is “when you have the player here you have to develop him and I think that works”.
