The rains are back to erase the aftereffects of a summer which was particularly hot and difficult for all Algerians. While autumn has already begun, the drops in temperature have not always been accompanied by precipitation.
Yesterday, several regions of the country experienced rainfall. According to the latest press release from the national meteorological office, this situation will continue today, October 14, 2021. Indeed, the press release states that it will rain this Thursday in 8 wilayas of the country.
The wilayas concerned are Constantine, Souk Ahras, Guelma, Jijel, Skikda, Annaba, Taref, and Béjaia. This is, for the meteorological office, a yellow and orange level alert. Precipitation becomes more pronounced the further east you go.
The bulletin of the national meteorological office which took effect yesterday at 9 p.m., was extended this morning by observers of the ONM who predict that the rains will cease around 11 a.m. The amounts of rain forecast by the ONM bulletin vary between 20 and 30 Mm and may reach 40 Mm locally.
Awareness of the risk of flooding
The first rains of autumn often cause damage in Algeria. In addition to the areas of the interior of the country, the capital Algiers only confirms the rule each time.
The latest rains in the capital have caused the closure of several roads to traffic. The elements of civil protection had to intervene at the level of several municipalities.
To face this risk, public authorities are called upon to ensure the maintenance of conduits and installations related to sanitation. Several volunteer campaigns have also been launched by the population.
