What are the warning signs of thyroid problems?

Did you know that tiredness, hair loss, or even weight gain could be signs of a thyroid disorder. This is confirmed by Dr. Luis Huarachí, endocrinologist and member of the Peruvian Society of Endocrinology, who assures that many people normalize these symptoms are caused by stress or by leading an unhealthy lifestyle.

These alterations occur in women with a frequency of 5 to 8 times higher than in men, and in them it can cause fertility problems, obesity, heart problems, among others.”He adds.

In order to support the knowledge of thyroid problems and promote timely identification, the specialist below details the main disorders of this hormone and the warning signs that an undiagnosed patient may present:

  • Hypothyroidism A disorder in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough of certain hormones, causing fatigue or drowsiness, sensitivity to cold, weight gain, depression, hair loss, menstrual variations, brittle nails, and dry skin.
  • Hyperthyroidism It occurs when the thyroid gland secretes too much thyroxine hormone, speeding up the body’s metabolism and causing involuntary weight loss and rapid or irregular heartbeats. Likewise, it may present symptoms such as nervousness, irritability, anxiety, increased sweating and shaky hands.

Luis Huarachí recommends that patients with this condition and who are undergoing treatment, keep the same schedule and medication, because if they make any changes, the doctor would have to evaluate the dose again.

In addition, there must be an adequate follow-up and control of the pathology. The periodicity of the consultations is determined by the specialist doctor, according to the need of each case. For example, for patients with hypothyroidism, it can be every three months; while, in the case of those with hyperthyroidism or in the initial stages of either of the two diseases, it can be up to every 14 days”, It indicates.

The specialist explains that the diagnosis of these diseases is achieved through a thyroid stimulating hormone (THS) test, which allows any alteration to be identified in time. “The test must be carried out from 18 years onwards and if the result is negative, this test must be repeated within 3 years. In the case of patients over 60 years of age, it is recommended to take the test every year ”, he concludes.
