WhatsApp finally gets a sticker maker in the app

Finally, WhatsApp gained a native sticker creation tool. Still exclusive to the web version of the messenger, the feature allows you to select an image from the computer, cut and edit it the way you want and send it as a sticker.

Until then, there were no official ways to create stickers on WhatsApp — users who want to create stickers needed to download alternative apps (and there are several on the Play Store, for example). The feature first appeared in the trial version of WhatsApp Beta, but even testers couldn’t try it at the time.

However, the wait is finally over this Wednesday (24). The sticker editor has been made available in the browser messenger under the new “Create” sticker tray button. By clicking on it, the user can choose exactly which image he would like to transform into a sticker and start the editing process.

The editing screen is very similar to that of a normal image: you can choose the size of the sticker, adjust its orientation, add emojis, texts, drawings and even other stickers. Once finished, just click on the arrow button in the lower right corner to send it to the desired group or contact.

It works but not 100%

In tests here at Canaltech, the tool seems to work exactly as expected: the trimming and editing functions are quite complete, as are alternative applications. However, PC-made artwork (whether web or desktop version) is not synced to mobile in any way — the only way to use a custom creation is to save it as a favorite after sending it in a conversation.

Although it is an inconvenience, it is not so serious that it makes the tool bad. What’s missing now to make the stickers perfect on WhatsApp is to have a clearer way to catalog each of the stickers, instead of gathering all the cool finds out there in the favorites folder.

According to WhatsApp, users of the final version of WhatsApp Desktop will receive the news next week. If you already want to try the feature, connect your phone to WhatsApp Web through your browser and start creating — no download is necessary in this case. For the mobile app, no publisher’s release predictions were revealed.
