Windows 10 and 11 appear to have been blocked in Russia by Microsoft

Windows 10 and Windows 11 are no longer available in Russia, it seems. Several users on Twitter have reported that they are unable to download the operating system ISO and the installation utility program displays error messages. However, it is not yet known whether the reason for this is due to intentional blocking by Microsoft or just an error in the company’s server.

Tests from the BleepingComputer team verified the situation through using VPN and when they tried to download the Windows 10 upgrade wizard, the Media Creation Tool or the Windows 11 Setup Wizard, a “blank” page simply appeared ” with the error message “404 – file or directory not found”. Others reports say that there is a message “There was a problem with your request” when trying to download the Windows 10 or 11 ISO.

In March of this year, Microsoft had already suspended its sales and services in Russia. At the time, it was posted on Microsoft’s blog by Microsoft’s vice president, Brad Smith, saying that the company was “coordinating closely and working closely with the governments of the United States, the European Union and the United Kingdom, and we are disrupting many aspects of our business in Russia in compliance with government sanctions decisions.”

Considering the scenario, Microsoft might actually have blocked access to your operating system

Even though there has not yet been an official statement about the unsuccessful attempts to download Windows 10 or 11 in Russia, it is believed that this is something intentional. Considering what has already happened at the beginning of 2022, it is very likely that this is just another step towards removing everything the company has on Russian territory.
