Wirtz extends in Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen managed a real coup. As announced by the Werkself, the exceptionally talented 19-year-old Florian Wirtz has extended his contract by a year until 2027.

Sports director Simon Rolfes says: “In trusting and very good discussions with Florian and his family, we have agreed to resolutely continue on the path we started in January 2020. The fact that we are documenting this here and now with a further extension of the cooperation that has already been planned underlines the absolute satisfaction on both sides.”

Wirtz himself can be quoted: “There is a lot in us and in this club. We want to show that to all Bayer 04 fans. And those who aren’t.”

From Cologne’s U17s to the DFB team

In January 2020, Wirtz switched from the U17s at 1. FC Köln directly to the Leverkusen professional team and has been off to a great start ever since. In 78 professional games, the attacking midfielder has scored 19 goals and provided 22 assists. He also made it into the German national team.

In March, the right-footed player with a great sense of humor tore a cruciate ligament in the 2-0 win in Wolfsburg, which will put him out of action until October. After that, he would like to attack fully again with Bayer – and obviously in the long term. At the very least, the contract extension puts the Werkself in an even better negotiating position in potential future transfer talks.
