Woody Allen announces his retirement

End clap for Woody Allen. The prospect of the retirement of the director of “Manhattan” had been brewing for a few months. In a long interview granted to the Spanish daily “La Vanguardia », the 86-year-old American filmmaker, soon to be shooting his fiftieth film, confirms that he wants to stop directing to devote himself to writing. He also publishes “Gravity Zero”, a series of humorous stories, particularly about the world of cinema, in bookstores on September 27.

“Cinema has changed, human stories are no longer as interesting. In the United States, many cinemas have closed. My next film will be number 50, I think it’s the right time to stop. My idea, in principle, is not to make more films and focus on writing, these stories and, well, now I’m thinking more of a novel, which would be my first novel. »

Last movie in Paris?

It must be said that Woody Allen is one of the most prolific filmmakers of the last fifty years. The director has produced practically one film a year since the early 1970s. He is also one of the most famous and Oscar-winning, with four statuettes to his credit as best director (“Annie Hall”) and best original screenplay (“Annie Hall”, “Hannah and her sisters” and “Midnight in Paris”).

Woody Allen, however, has faced significant controversy for several years after accusations of touching his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow, accusations largely revived with the appearance of the #MeToo movement. The filmmaker has always denied the facts of which he was accused.

Woody Allen explains: “One day, we will understand how much there is a mistake”

Filming in Paris in a few weeks for his final film “Wasp 22”, Woody Allen promises a “amorous and poisonous thriller”, in the same vein as “Match Point”, one of his greatest hits released in 2005 with Jonathan Rhys-Meyers and Scarlett Johansson. The casting will be entirely in French, but it is for the time being, still, scrupulously kept secret, as he explained last July at the “JDD” » :

“I really like this city and I have come often, discovering magical places each time. »
