Zelenskyj: – We must get the world out of this impasse

On Wednesday evening, Norwegian time, the UN Security Council gathered for an emergency meeting.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for the meeting after Wednesday’s attack by Russia, which left most households in Ukraine without electricity.

Formally, it was the United States and Albania that requested the meeting.

In his speech, Zelenskyj repeated the message he made on Twitter, that he demands a clear response to the Russian attacks from the international community.

– We have to get the world out of this impasse, Zelenskyj said on video link in the meeting.

Many without electricity

Earlier on Wednesday, Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy stated that the “vast majority” of households in the country have lost power following Wednesday’s wave of Russian attacks.

It came on a day when there have been sub-zero temperatures in several places in Ukraine, including in the capital Kyiv.

Several nuclear power plants also ended up without power.

Zelenskyj believes that the attacks against the civilian population and civilian infrastructure are clear crimes against humanity.

– Must be held accountable

Norway’s UN ambassador Mona Juul used her speech at the meeting to, among other things, clarify Norway’s support for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people.

– We are horrified by Russia’s continued war of aggression, which is a gross violation of international law and the UN Charter, said Juul.

She went to great lengths to condemn the attacks targeting civilians.

– The attacks serve no military purpose. The aim seems to be to terrorize the population. They are illegal and may amount to war crimes. Those responsible must be held accountable.

Juul also expressed concern about the situation around the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant.

– We support the efforts of the IAEA to establish a nuclear safety zone. Russia must immediately withdraw its military forces, Juul said.
