Activities for children and teenagers during the summer

Summer is not over yet and you have a boy or girl with a scientist’s soul at home, pay attention to this news.

City Parks Foundation offers a variety of activities for children and teens during these summer months, including a marine science program.

One of them occurs for free in Gravesend Bay, near Coney Island Creek.

Here, students fish with a purse seine, using a net called a Seine.

Students in the program spend their time not only fishing, but also working on other activities such as building remote-operated vehicles with cameras to explore the waters.

There is also bird watching, paddle boarding and canoeing excursions to places like the New York Aquarium, The Intrepid, Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, Rockaway Beach, and more.

Luis González, Associate Director of Environmental Education, City Parks Foundation explains:

“The goal of this program is to show students that these places are alive, that these bodies of water have a lot of life and that their decisions have positive or negative repercussions for the ecosystem.”

This program is also a career path for college alumni who want to work in the classroom, as they can return as mentors and interns at the high school.
