ARLINGTON.- Jarren Duran won the All-Star Game MVP award Tuesday, hitting a tiebreaking two-run homer in the fifth inning as the American League beat the National League 5-3.
Boston’s Duran made sure to give the Young Circuit its tenth win in the last 11 editions of the mid-season classic.
Pittsburgh rookie Paul Skenes pitched a hitless first inning for the National League. His fastball twice topped 100 mph. Also in the NL, Shohei Ohtani hit a three-run homer in the third inning to make it 3-0.
Dominican Juan Soto hit a two-run double and scored on David Fry’s single to tie the game in the third inning. Duran homered off Cincinnati’s Hunter Greene.
Oakland right-hander Mason Miller earned the win after throwing a 103.6 mph pitch, the fastest in All-Star Game history since records began in 2008.
Cleveland’s Dominican closer Emmanuel Clase, who specializes in fastballs, struck out a pair in the ninth inning and earned the save.
For the National League, Dominicans Ketel Marte went 1-for-3 with one run scored, Marcell Ozuna went 0-for-1, Elly de la Cruz went 1-for-2, Teoscar Hernandez went 0-for-2. Puerto Rican Heliot Ramos went 0-for-1. Venezuelan William Contreras went 0-for-2.
For the American League, Dominicans Soto 1-1 with one run scored and two RBIs, Jose Ramirez, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. 2-0. Venezuelans Anthony Santander 2-1 with one run scored, Salvador Perez 1-0. Puerto Rican Willi Castro 1-0. Mexican Isaac Paredes 1-0.
