“These have been very challenging days and months for the staff of the (Argentine) Embassy, in which they have given unquestionable proof of their professionalism, their human qualities and their sense of duty,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The diplomatic staff, military attachés and administrative attachés – 14 people in total – left Caracas on Thursday for Portugal. They are expected to arrive in Argentina on Saturday.
Venezuelan asylum seekers are in the care of Brazil
Brazilian authorities will take over “custody” of their embassy in Venezuela, where six Venezuelan opposition members who enjoy political asylum under the Caracas Convention are still refugees.
The Convention on Diplomatic Asylum adopted in Caracas in 1954 states that if asylum seekers cannot leave the State together with diplomatic personnel, they must be handed over “to the representation of a third State party.”
