Be careful at sea! Three shark attacks in Florida in one week

MIAMI.- The number of people attacked by sharks in Florida in the last week has risen to three, following a recent case in which a 14-year-old teenager was killed.

Beach safety officials in Volusia County, in central Florida, known as the shark bite capital of the world, reported that the minor was attacked around noon on Monday.

According to the official report, the young man was bitten by the shark when he entered the water at Ponce Inlet, a beach area north of the pier. He received a bite on his right calf.

The teen, whose identity is being withheld, was participating in the Youth Lifeguard Camp, Volusia county officials said.

Two other cases

The new case follows another that occurred Friday when a 26-year-old Sarasota man was bitten on his left foot while on his float.

The incident occurred in New Smyrna Beach, on the east coast of Florida. The man was floating in an area about five feet deep, according to official spokesmen.

The incident occurred nearly 24 hours after a 21-year-old Ohio man was bitten at the same beach while playing soccer in knee-deep water, according to spokespeople for Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue.

None of the three men’s injuries were life-threatening, according to medical reports.

According to the International Shark Attack File, there have been 1,632 unprovoked shark bites in the United States since 1837. The majority of the attacks, 928, occurred in Florida.

According to experts, this is largely due to Florida’s 2,177-kilometer coastline, the largest in the United States.
