Brazil assumes Argentine representation and protects asylum seekers in its embassy

CARACAS.- The government of Lula Da Silva accepted Argentina’s request for Brazil to represent its interests in Venezuela and to maintain under its protection the six opposition leaders who are sheltered in the ambassador’s residence in Caracas, after the diplomatic corps of that country was expelled by the Venezuelan regime.

All this is done within the framework of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

This is a decision of enormous importance on the international agenda of the Casa Rosada, following the expulsion of diplomats ordered by the Nicolás Maduro regime due to Javier Milei’s refusal to recognize his victory in the fraudulent elections on Sunday and his concern for the fate of these political leaders.

Both the President of Argentina, Javier Milei, and the Venezuelan opposition leader, María Corina Machado, thanked Brazil for its actions.

“We thank the Brazilian government for its willingness to assume the diplomatic and consular representation of the Republic of Argentina in Venezuela, and the protection of its headquarters and residence, as well as the physical integrity of our colleagues who have taken refuge in said residence. This could contribute to advancing a constructive and effective negotiation process such as the one that Brazil has supported,” said Machado.

María Corina Machado reiterated her willingness to participate in serious and urgent negotiations to facilitate an understanding between the parties that will facilitate an orderly transition in accordance with the will expressed by Venezuelan citizens on July 28.

“I greatly appreciate Brazil’s willingness to take over the custody of the Argentine Embassy in Venezuela. We also appreciate the momentary representation of the interests of the Argentine Republic and its citizens there,” Milei said on her official X account.

He recalled that on August 1, “Argentine diplomatic personnel had to leave Venezuela in retaliation by dictator Maduro for our condemnation of the fraud perpetrated last Sunday.”

The Brazilian flag was raised at the residence of the Argentine ambassador in Caracas, before the departure of the diplomats who were expelled. The departure of the contingent was made through Portugal.

Venezuelan analyst Ricardo Díaz said on his social networks that the recent tweets @MariaCorinaYA about the performance of Colombia and Brazil, “clearly suggest that both countries are articulating a negotiation process on the political crisis aggravated by the leadership” and urged his followers “not to get carried away”, alluding to the strong criticism received by these nations for abstaining from voting on a resolution of the Organization of American States to request the definitive delivery of electoral evidence by the Venezuelan regime that indicates its victory while the opposition, with minutes in hand, says the opposite.
