NEW YORK.- Cuban first baseman Yandy Díaz entered the restricted list of the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday and the team recalled infielder Curtis Mead from Triple-A Durham.
Diaz missed Friday’s 6-1 loss to the New York Yankees, the Rays’ first game since the All-Star break. Rays manager Kevin Cash said the decision was made for family reasons and that he did not qualify for Major League Baseball’s family emergency list. Cash said it was not a disciplinary decision.
“We’re taking it day by day,” Cash said. “Hopefully we’ll see him soon.”
Diaz, 32, is batting .273 with eight homers and 46 RBIs. He was selected to the All-Star team for the first time last year when he led the American League with a .330 batting average, 22 homers and 78 RBIs.
Mead began the season with the Rays hitting .218 with one homer and five RBIs in 26 games. But the 23-year-old rookie was optioned to Triple-A on May 6.
Pogacar equals historic record in France:
Tadej Pogacar equalled a Tour de France record on Saturday and will likely do the same on Sunday.
Pogacar overtook Jonas Vingegaard at the top of the Col De La Couillole to win the 20th and penultimate stage and added more seconds to his considerable lead.
It was the fifth stage win this month for the two-time champion, who stretched out his arms and crossed the finish line before raising his hand to indicate the number of victories.
The only cyclist to have won five mountain stages in a single Tour was Gino Bartali in 1948.
“If they had told me this before the Tour I wouldn’t have believed them,” Pogacar said. “It’s out of this world. I’m very happy.”
“(Five stages) is more than enough. One would be enough. Just the yellow jersey would be enough. But it is what it is.”
