Earthquakes in Turkey and Syria: the toll, still provisional, now exceeds 30,000 dead

The results of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on Monday are still provisional. According to the UN, this figure could still greatly increase, or even “double”.

The toll, still provisional, of the earthquakes that occurred on Monday in Turkey and Syria now stands at 33,179 dead, thus exceeding the symbolic milestone of 30,000 dead, the latest official reports announced on Sunday.

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed 29,605 people in southern Turkey, Afad, Turkey’s public disaster management body, said on Sunday, while authorities counted 3,574 dead in Syria.

The head of the UN humanitarian agency, Martin Griffiths, said earlier on Sunday that the human toll, then estimated at 28,000 dead, was likely to “double or more”.
