Expert Haci-Halil Uslucan: If Erdogan wins, even more people could leave Turkey
Integration researcher Uslucan: So far, intellectuals in particular have left the country
Osnabruck. The integration researcher Haci-Halil Uslucan assumes that the outcome of Turkey’s elections will have a significant impact on migration. “It can be expected that if Erdogan is re-elected, the system will become even more repressive and more people will leave Turkey,” he told the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung (NOZ). There are people who make their departure dependent on the election. “If there is a correction and the opposition wins, they stay, otherwise they leave Turkey,” he said. So far, intellectuals in particular have turned their backs on the country.
According to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, 13,206 Turks applied for asylum in Germany in the first four months of this year. This puts Turkey behind Syria and Afghanistan third place of the main countries of origin.
Parliamentary and presidential elections will take place in Turkey on May 14th. After 20 years in power, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has to fear for his re-election. Polls predict a neck-and-neck race between him and his challenger, opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu.
