Haas loses one of its drivers heading into the next Formula 1 season

KANNAPOLIS.- The pilot of the Formula 1Kevin Magnussen will leave the team Haas at the end of the season after his contract expires, the team confirmed on Thursday.

Magnussen, 31, is in his seventh season with the American team and has started 135 awards over two periods from 2017 to 2020 and 2022 to 2024.

The former McLaren and Renault driver’s best career finish was ninth in the drivers’ standings with Haas in 2018. He has five points this season.

Haas has not announced who will replace Magnussen.

The team has been linked with a move for Alpine driver Esteban Ocon, who is set to leave at the end of the season, and Magnussen could possibly take his place.

“I am proud to have raced with an incredible group of people over the years,” said Magnussen. “But I am excited about the next chapter of my racing career. I remain focused on giving it my all for the rest of 2024.”

On the eve of the start of the Hungarian GP, team boss Ayao Komatsu said he hopes they “can find a way to continue working together in some way.”

News of Magnussen’s departure comes after Oliver Bearman signed a multi-year deal with Haas from 2025. The 19-year-old British driver will take over from German Nico Hulkenberg, who is set to leave for Sauber at the end of the year before they rebrand as Audi in 2026.

WNBA assists record:

Rookie Caitlin Clark broke the WNBA record for assists with 19, but the Indiana Fever fell 101-93 to the Dallas Wings on Wednesday.

“I just try to help my teammates be successful,” Clark said. “I think I can almost over-pass sometimes.”

The previous mark was 18 assists, set by Chicago’s Courtney Vandersloot on Aug. 31, 2020. Vanderloot also had 18 assists in a playoff game on Sept. 28, 2021.

And the previous league record for assists by a rookie was 16, set by Sacramento’s Ticha Penicheiro on July 29, 1998.

The record-breaking assist came on a play when Clark passed to Kelsey Mitchell, who hit a 3-pointer with 2:22 left. That tied the score at 93, but Dallas went on an eight-point run that included a turnover by Clark with the Fever down by four with 36 seconds left.

Clark entered the game as the WNBA’s season-high assists per game leader. She added 24 points on 10-of-19 shooting.
