IDEA Group travels to Venezuela to monitor presidential elections

MIAMI.- The Democratic Initiative of Spain and the Americas (IDEA Group) announced that a delegation of former heads of state will travel to Venezuela on July 26 to participate in the accompaniment of the presidential elections to be held in that country on July 28.

The delegation includes former Mexican President Vicente Fox; former Panamanian President Mireya Moscoso; former Costa Rican President Miguel Ángel Rodríguez; former Bolivian President Jorge Tuto Quiroga; and former Colombian Vice President Marta Lucía Ramírez.

Latin American leaders will represent their colleagues from IDEA to accompany the Venezuelan people during the day in which they will elect the president of the Republic of Venezuela who will take office on January 10, 2025.

In the announcement, IDEA Group maintains that “as firm defenders of the sovereign popular will and aware of the majority determination of the Venezuelan people for elections that guarantee peace and freedom for all, the former presidents carry a message of hope, solidarity and respect for the decisions they freely make at this crucial moment in their history.”

The IDEA Group, “composed of more than 30 former heads of state and government with diverse political and ideological affiliations, is a non-governmental organization committed to the promotion and protection of the democratic principles enshrined in the Inter-American Democratic Charter.”

“From the perspective of civil society and public opinion, IDEA observes and analyzes democratic processes in Latin America, reflecting on strategies to establish or restore democracy where necessary, as well as to defend and respect it in those countries where it is rooted,” the organization’s statement said.
