This is the Biden’s first tour to Latin America since he took office two years ago. As for Mexico, the last US president to visit our country was Barack Obama in 2014, as a show of support in the fight against drug cartels.
Before arriving in the Mexican capital, Joe Biden will visit the US-Mexico bordersince the migratory crisis and drug trafficking will have a special role on the agenda of the North American Leaders Summit.
Biden plans to visit the US-Mexico border prior to his meeting with AMLO
The announcement was made one day after the president of the United States declined the invitation to use the AIFA runway, so he will arrive in the country at the Mexico City Airport.
Prior to his arrival in the Mexican capital, Biden will make a stop at El Paso, Texaswhich will also represent his first visit to the southern border, a problematic region due to high levels of illegal migration.
It is no secret to the US media that Biden has been avoiding going to the border strip for two years, amid criticism from the Republican opposition over the arrival of millions of irregular migrants.

The conclave in Mexico City, which from Monday will include the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeauoccurs just a few days after Biden presented a new plan that plans to return up to 30,000 irregular migrants from Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua and Haiti to Mexico every month.
In addition, in the Mexican context, last Thursday federal forces carried out an operation to capture Ovid Guzman Lopezone of the leaders of Sinaloa carteland whom the US government claims in extradition for his responsibility in the massive trafficking of drugs such as cocaine and fentanyl.
On the negotiating table in “the Summit of the Three Amigos” there is a selection of priority issues, such as illegal migration, drug trafficking, trade and the climate crisis.
It should be remembered that Mexico and the US are in conflict over trade issues regarding energy and the Mexican position to close the importation of transgenic white corn.
But for the White House, the priority issue is the immigration crisis on the border with Mexico, a region that is experiencing record arrivals of migrants from the entire continent seeking to enter the United States.
The new plan presented by Biden on Thursday, and supported by the López Obrador government, contemplates granting 30,000 humanitarian permits per month for Venezuelan, Cuban, Nicaraguan and Haitian migrants who have an economic sponsor in the United States.
But the other part of the plan establishes that those who cross the border without permission will be returned immediately to the territory of Mexico and they will be banned from entering the country for five years.
White House Security Council spokesman John Kirby said at a pre-trip news conference that this is “an example of close cooperation on migration” between the United States and Mexico.
Another issue that greatly worries the Democratic administration is drug trafficking, especially fentanyl, a substance associated with more than one hundred thousand overdose deaths in the United States in the last year.
The anti-drug agency of that country (DEA) seized enough fentanyl in 2022 to “kill the entire population” of the United States and Ovidio Guzmán is accused of directing dozens of laboratories that produce this synthetic substance.
In exchange for the capture of Ovid Guzmanthe Mexican government will ask Biden for more efforts to stop US arms trafficking to Mexico, with the intention of reducing the wave of violence and intentional homicides throughout the country.
