Judge sets trial date of classified documents against Trump for May 2024

Donald Trump en Louisville, Kentucky.

May next year. district judge Aileen Cannon announced this Friday that the trial for the classified documents found in Mar-a-Lago, residence of former President Donald Trump, will begin that month. It could start as soon as May 20.

In this way, the judicial process will coincide with the race for the GOP nomination. Trump’s legal team had tried to avoid putting it off until after the election, arguing that not doing so would set back both the electoral course and the legal process.

This ‘defeat’ of the defense is not seen, however, as a victory for the team of the special prosecutor Jack Smithwho wanted to put Trump on the bench in December of this year.

Trump pleaded not guilty

The objective of Trump’s lawyers is clear: to prove his innocence. Trump pleaded not guilty of the 37 charges with which he was charged by the Department of Justice (DOJ).

The DOJ assures that the former president saved high-level classified material after leaving the presidency, he shared it with those who did not have authorization and, later, tried to prevent the authorities’ attempts to recover them.
