More than a musical genre, a cultural emblem

More than a musical genre, a cultural emblem

MIAMI. – World Day of Rock It’s July 13th. The RAE identifies rock as “each of the various musical styles derived from rock and roll.” In this sense, rock is an English word that refers to a genre popularized since the 1950s and that was born from the fusion of various styles of American folklore.

The characteristics of this musical style include the electric guitar, 4/4 time signatures and a verse-chorus structure. The choice of this date is due to the fact that on July 13, 1985, a Live Aid charity concert was held in support of African communities living in famine.

This event was done simultaneously in London and Philadelphia, and several bands performed: Led Zeppelin, The Who, Black Sabbath, Queen, Sting, Judas Priest, Duran Duran, U2, Scorpions, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton and Phil Collins.

The concert was broadcast in 72 countries and lasted 16 hours. After this, it was proposed to adopt the date as a day to celebrate rock. One of the contributions of this genre is that, in addition to transmitting music, it has been a motion cultural that transcended borders, languages and ideologies.
