Musician brings arts to war-torn places

Musician brings arts to war-torn places

A Brooklyn artist is using his love of music to help make a difference in war-torn parts of the world.

Guitarist and songwriter Dustin Carlson will spend two weeks in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.

There he works with a dozen music students on their compositions and helps them with their performances.

Her work is part of the nonprofit organization American Voices.

The group mentors and trains the next generation of artists, educators and arts leaders in countries emerging from conflict and isolation.

Carlson is one of approximately 200 musicians from across the country participating in the program.

They say this work is important because arts and arts-based education are becoming less available in many areas, especially in parts of the world that have experienced prolonged military conflict.
