New eruption of Etna volcano disrupts flights in Catania

SICILY.- He volcano Mount Etna in Sicily erupted early Sunday morning, August 4, according to reports from Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.

The most affected areas are Acireale and Zafferana where a thick layer of ash has already been detected. In addition, the airport from Catania is partially operational.

The eruption of Mount Etna has produced lava fountains and a volcanic cloud with the consequent rain of lava ash and pyroclastic fragments in an east-southeast direction.

Following this, the crisis unit at Catania Fontanarossa Airport has ordered the closure of sector B1 and the reduction of arrivals to six flights per hour.

Since the evening of Saturday 3 August, Etna’s ‘Voragine’ crater has been active at an altitude of 2,800-2,900 metres above sea level. Etna is the most active volcano in Europe.
