The political and social crisis in Peru has been going on for more than two months and according to a publication by the Ombudsman, there are still blockades on some roads, as well as mobilizations and announcements of upcoming protests. Since December 7, 2022, 60 deaths have been registered, including a police officer who was burned. 48 civilians lost their lives in the clashes while 11 due to accidents linked to the road blockade.

Until February 14, the Ombudsman registered 1,298 injuries, 905 of which were registered in 2023. The remaining 393 were registered since December 7, the day on which Pedro Castillo carried out a coup and Dina Boluarte took over as President of the Republic. From the National Police of Peru Only 580 injuries have been reported as of January 20 of this year.
“Of the 905 injured people reported by the Ministry of Health in 2023, 289 would correspond to the PNP and four to the Armed Forces. Likewise, of the 393 people injured in 2022, 44 would correspond to the PNP and two to the Armed Forces. The Ombudsman’s Office continues to verify and record the information of injured people,” says the report by the institution that watches over the human rights of citizens.
Regarding the mobilizations, on February 19 there was only one in Moyobamba while the blockades have occurred in the provinces of El Collao, Chucuito, Puno, San Román, Lampa, Azángaro, Melgar and Carabaya. Protests have been announced in Arequipa, Puno and Loreto while in La Convención there were threats to take over facilities. Access road blockages were reported in Espinar.
