Police: DC Officer Shoots Domestic Violence Suspect Who Would Have Been Armed

A DC police officer shot and wounded a domestic violence suspect on Georgia Avenue NW Thursday after the man drew a weapon, authorities said.

The shooting occurred during a Metropolitan Police Department briefing on how to respond to an increase in crime.

Officers were called to a “domestic violence incident” in the 7400 block of Georgia Avenue NW around 10:30 am, Acting Police Chief Pamela Smith said. They had a description of the suspect.

“The officer got engaged, had a conversation with the suspect. The suspect turned, drew a gun, and our officer fired a shot,” Smith explained.

The officer was not injured. The suspect, whose name was not released, was taken to a hospital. Information about his condition was not immediately released.

Several officers surrounded a gas station a few blocks south of the line between DC and Maryland.

The 7400 block of Georgia Ave. NW and part of Geranium Avenue were closed around 11:20 a.m. due to police activity, authorities said.
