For many football fans, they were the moderation highlight of the past World Cup: Esther Sedlaczek and Bastian Schweinsteiger knew how to convince across the board at the controversial tournament in Qatar – which from a German perspective was otherwise lacking in highlights.
In addition to the good analysis of the games from the point of view of many fans, the spectators praised the chemistry between the two. In some places, Esther Sedlaczek and Bastian Schweinsteiger openly flirted with each other. Although it is known that both are in happy relationships, the supposed TV romance fascinated the German public.
Esther Sedlaczek: Always asking about Bastian Schweinsteiger
It is clear that the presenter is now always asked about her famous colleague, wherever she goes. It was the same again on Thursday evening when the ZDF show “Studio Schmitt” was broadcast, in which Sedlaczek was invited as a guest.
In the show by presenter Tommi Schmitt, she spoke openly about working with Schweinsteiger, about his unloved nickname and about her “TV dad”, the German sports presenter Ulrich Potofski.

“It’s great fun with Basti,” says Esther Sedlaczek enthusiastically. Even after the World Cup, the two stayed together as a moderation team and are often used for Bundesliga games. Born in Berlin, she describes her time with Schweinsteiger at the World Cup as “a very intensive exchange in an intensive time”. “We worked together for almost four weeks,” she recalls.
However, the moderator is reluctant to name the 2014 world champion as her favorite expert partner. She also worked well with other experts such as Lothar Matthäus, Didi Hamann and Franz Beckenbauer. “But never as intensively as with Basti,” admits Ester Sedlaczek.
Esther Sedlaczek reveals: That’s what keeps Schweinsteiger from his nickname
The 37-year-old resists calling Bastian Schweinsteiger “Schweini”, as many fans and large parts of the media have been doing for decades. “I’ve never called him ‘pig’. He doesn’t like it,” she reveals.
At the end of the show, the “Studio Schmitt” editors had a surprise in store for Esther Sedlaczek.

Esther Sedlaczek: Close to tears when we meet Mentor again
Because to her astonishment, Tommi Schmitt suddenly announced Uli Potofski – the man whom Esther Sedlaczek describes as her mentor. Together with the moderator, she had one of her first formats on the pay TV channel Sky a good ten years ago.
“It’s amazing, I almost have tears in my eyes,” said Esther Sedlaczek, visibly moved when they met again. The two had only written to each other in the past few years, but had not seen each other.
