Buenos Aires, Aug 10 (EFE).- Argentine midfielder Alan Varela played his last game last night with Boca Juniors, a team that this Thursday paid him an emotional tribute on the occasion of his farewell to local football to emigrate to Portuguese Porto.
Varela has been sold to the Porto team for about 10 million dollars, becoming the tenth highest paid transfer in the history of Boca Juniors, a table led by today’s Racing Club coach, Fernando Gago, who left for almost 28 million dollars against Real Madrid in the 2006-2007 campaign, according to data compiled by the sports newspaper Olé.
In an animated video with the song “Here comes the sun” by The Beatles, published by the club’s official account ‘xeneize’ on Twitter, the entire squad led by Jorge Almirón is seen stamping their signature on an auriazul shirt.
The final image shows the delivery of the gift to Varela, who says excitedly: “I take the best of each one. And thank you.”
The footballer born in La Matanza, in the province of Buenos Aires, 22 years ago and trained in the lower categories of Boca Juniors, played his last game yesterday with the auriazul shirt, in which his team made it to the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores after eliminating the Uruguayan Nacional in the penalty shootout.
In the press conference after the match, Varela said: “I am grateful for the love they gave me from the beginning. Hopefully one day I can return to La Bombonera and enjoy it again.”
In the four years that he has been in the Boquense first team, Varela won a League (2022), a Super Cup (2022), two League Cups (2020 and 2022) and an Argentine Cup (2019-2020). EFE
