PARIS.- The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) rejected this Tuesday the appeal of the International Boxing Association (IBA), who wanted the organization of the olympic tournament, after being excluded in June by the IOC for poor governance.
The IBA (International Boxing Association) “has not improved its financial transparency,” argued the CAS to justify its decision, and “did not change its processes aimed at ensuring the integrity of referees and judges.”
In June 2023, at the end of four years of conflict, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had officially expelled the IBA from its fold, mainly reproaching it for governance problems, repetitive refereeing scandals or its persistent economic dependence on the Russian giant Gazprom. .
For all this, the IBA lost the organization of the Olympic boxing tournaments and the associated economic manna.
The IOC established a body with the purpose of organizing both the qualification process and the Olympic tournament.
New structure in boxing:
In parallel, a new structure was created, World Boxing, promoted behind the scenes by several Western federations, and which already has the support of Switzerland and the United States, which will host the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028.
During the hearing before the CAS in November, the IBA had indicated that in the event of an unfavorable decision it would go before the ordinary Swiss justice system to seek the invalidation of the sports justice verdict.
Boxing remains one of the most popular sports disciplines in the world and one of the leaders in the Olympic Games every four years.
