“Times” columnist becomes “political secretary”: British prime minister makes close friend his advisor

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has appointed one of his closest friends as his political adviser. Journalist James Forsyth, who previously worked for the conservative magazine Spectator and also worked as a columnist for the Times newspaper, is Sunak’s new political secretary, Downing Street said on Saturday.

In the role, Forsyth will act as a liaison between the Prime Minister, the Downing Street political entity and Sunak’s Conservative Party, it said. It is a political decision at no cost to taxpayers.

Both men are godfathers to each other’s children. According to media reports, Sunak is Forsyth’s best man. The 41-year-old is married to Allegra Stratton.

The former TV journalist was then-Treasury Secretary Sunak’s communications chief from April to October 2020 before moving to Prime Minister Boris Johnson as spokesperson. She resigned in December 2021 over her involvement in the “Partygate” scandal.
