Acronym for Authenticated Transfer Protocol (or, in literal translation, Authenticated Transfer Protocol), the AT Protocol is a communication language based on open source, a concept similar to what is seen in the construction of Linux. The technology caught the public’s attention after the launch of Bluesky, a social network that uses this system.

How the AT Protocol works
Social networks that use the AT Protocol can be called federated social networks. These platforms are hosted on different servers but talk to each other within one big system.
The intent of the AT Protocol is to catalyze programmers’ efforts to create an individualized language in which platforms are far from the domain of Big Techs. Thus, they remain connected in the same environment and under full control of users.

It’s like you can consume content from YouTube, Twitch and Facebook in a single app or website. Another close example of this is e-mail: in it, anyone with an Outlook account can send and receive messages from other services, such as Yahoo! and Gmail.
Other features of AT Protocol are:
- A profile can be transferred from one server to another without any loss of data, as the accounts are unified;
- The digital identity data belongs to the person himself, not to the company that created the federated social network in use;
- Content moderation rules are also assigned to the members of social networks themselves, but with the consent of administrators;
- Algorithms can be changed by users themselves. The option ensures that the audience has more control over what is presented in the timeline;
- Loading windows and tabs is faster and saves the user from long waiting times;
- Programmers interested in the technology can use Lexicon, a global system that facilitates the insertion of new schemes and modifications in the platforms’ codes.
Bluesky is building a social protocol. We released “ADX” (the X stood for Experiment) in May. Now that the design is starting to solidify, we’re renaming it to the “Authenticated Transport Protocol” — the “AT Protocol.”
