What to do if you lose your job due to a disaster?

MIAMI.- The Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) program, whose website is DisasterAssistance.gov provides temporary benefits to individuals who, due to a major disaster, have lost or had to interrupt their employment or self-employment.

General Requirements: Can I get help from this program?

To qualify for DUA, you must meet both of the following conditions:

  • Your employment must have been lost or interrupted due to a presidentially declared disaster, and
  • You no must be eligible to receive regular unemployment insurance benefits.

If you lived, worked, or were scheduled to work in the declared disaster area, you may qualify for assistance if you meet any of the following conditions:

  • They no longer have a job or a place of work.
  • You cannot get to your place of employment.
  • You are unable to work because your workplace was damaged.
  • I was about to start a new job but due to the disaster, that job no longer exists.
  • Unable to work due to an injury caused by the disaster.
  • He became the main breadwinner of the household after the head of the family died in the disaster.

You must be available and able to work unless you meet one of the following two conditions:

  • You have an injury caused by the disaster, or
  • You are taking the necessary steps to return to self-employment.

Application process. How do I file a claim?

After a disaster, your state will post information about DUA availability. Contact your state unemployment insurance agency as soon as possible to file a claim for benefits. You can use CareerOneStop’s Unemployment Benefits Finder to find the state agency you need.

In some states you can file a claim online or by phone.

If you had to evacuate or move to another state, please apply in the state where the disaster occurred, or you may contact the agency in the state where you currently live for assistance in applying.
