The Panasonic is changing. Gone are the days of depth-from-defocus only, phase detection is here. Well, even at Panasonic, because all other manufacturers have been working with it for a long time. This is particularly advantageous for video recordings, because the autofocus pumps less. And moving images are the great strength of the Lumix S5II, even if an even more specialized sister, the S5II X, is to follow in June.
The manufacturer places the Lumix S5II at the bottom of its full format system, but with the new features it stands out very succinctly. Like its predecessor Lumix S5, it is a hybrid model that aims to appeal to both photographers and videographers. Its competitors are Sony’s Alpha 7C, a full-frame model whose exterior is based on the APS-C 6000 series. Since it was already published in 2020, a successor is expected this year. The new Canon EOS R8 and the Nikon Z 6II also want to inspire the same clientele as mirrorless full-frame cameras.
What these cameras have in common is that they contain technology that until recently was reserved exclusively for professional models: fast continuous shooting, very good image stabilization and autofocus with a high degree of accuracy and sophisticated tracking programs. Anyone who records videos, whether for social media or simply privately, can look forward to many supporting functions and a range of recording options.
