24 hours before the bell rings: parents are summoned to the “Know Your School” event

The interim secretary of the Department of Education, Yanira Raíces Vega, summoned parents and guardians to attend the “Know Your School” event on August 15, prior to the start of the school year.

“It is an opportunity for parents to get to know the facilities, the school community and actively participate in the development of their children”stated Raíces Vega in written statements.

““Know Your School” seeks to strengthen collaboration between teachers, the school community, and families to improve academic performance, attendance, and understanding of community needs,” he added.

At the event, the initiatives “Activa tus Valores” and the creation of a “Family Committee” will be presented. In addition, parents will be asked to sign the “Parents, Mothers and Guardians Commitment”, which underlines their responsibility in the academic formation of their children.

As the mother of a student in Bayamón, Raíces Vega highlighted her support for the initiative: “It will be an opportunity to understand infrastructure improvement projects and we all have the power to be an active part of these processes,” she mentioned.

“The “Parents’ Commitment” seeks to strengthen the parent-school relationship, including supervising attendance, participating in activities, fostering respect, and maintaining constant communication with teachers,” added Raíces Vega.

To support families, 1,169 social workers, 487 counselors, 881 nurses and 777 psychologists will offer integrated support in the Department of Education’s 856 schools.
