Avian flu detected in dairy cow meat, authorities rule out risk

WASHINGTON- Quarter worker agricultural contracted the bird flu in the outbreak linked to the cows dairy farmers, U.S. health officials reported Wednesday.

The Colorado worker is a man who was directly exposed to infected dairy cows, according to state health officials. He developed conjunctivitis, received antiviral treatment and has recovered.

The other three cases of human infections linked to cows have been reported in dairy workers in Texas and Michigan. Another person contracted bird flu after exposure to poultry, officials said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the new infection “does not change” the agency’s assessment that the risk to the general public remains low. Surveillance systems that monitor bird flu in the United States have not shown unusual activity, officials said.

As of Wednesday, more than 135 dairy cattle have been reported infected with the H5N1 virus type A that originated in poultry, according to the Department of Agriculture.
