A Quiet Place hits US box office, but fails to top Inside Out 2

The movie A Quiet Place: Day One is shaking the ticket officeThe prequel grossed an estimated $53 million in its opening weekend in U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to studio estimates released today, June 30.

It is both the best performance of a film in the franchise and a lot more money than expected. Before the weekend, the forecasts pointed to Day One would debut to $40 million, but audiences were clearly more excited to see the action-horror film starring Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn and distributed by Paramount. The same cannot be said of Horizon: An American Saga-Chapter 1, Kevin Costner’s film, which earned $11 million in its opening weekend.

However, the good performance of A Quiet Place It wasn’t enough to put it at the top of the box office. That honor once again belonged to the Disney and Pixas giant Inside Out 2which added around $57.4 million in its third weekend in theaters, and surpassed the $1 billion mark internationally.

There is a slim chance that the spots will change when the final figures are released on Monday. But in any case it is good news for movie theaters in a summer season that is finally warming up, but still far behind last year (-19%) and pre-pandemic norms (-36% since 2019).

Inside Out 2 continues to be a box office phenomenon, the likes of which has not been seen in the industry since Barbie almost a year ago. In just three weeks of release, it has grossed almost $470 million in North America and $545.5 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $1.01 billion. The sequel is the only 2024 release that has surpassed the $1 billion barrier and has done so in just 19 days, a record for an animated film.

A Quiet Place: Day Onedirected by Michael Sarnoski and rated PG-13, is also rapidly approaching an important threshold early on. Including $45.5 million from international screenings in 59 markets, the $67 million production has already grossed $98.5 million.
