A train and a car collided near Hanover. Three young people died.

Three people died in an accident involving a car and a train near Hanover (Lower Saxony). A police spokeswoman said this on Sunday morning at the request of the German Press Agency.

As the “Hannoversche Allgemeine” reported, the accident happened at the level crossing on Himmelreicher Straße, outside of Neustadt am Rübenberge. The city is around 28 kilometers from Hanover. A train and a car collided at around 4:50 a.m. at the crossing.

22-year-old driver among the dead

Before the fatal collision, the car drove onto the level crossing with the barrier closed, a police spokeswoman said on Sunday morning. Accordingly, it is a half barrier that does not span the entire width of the street.

The regional train caught the car “at full speed”, according to the spokeswoman. The three young inmates died. The driver was 22 years old, according to police. At first there was no more precise information about the age of the other two inmates, two young women.

Railway line closed – failures and delays

Accordingly, the course of the accident and the cause are still unclear. The level crossing is outside and north of the city, near the federal highway 6. According to the report, the train is a double-decker regional train to Bremen.

The railway line between Nienburg (Weser) and Neustadt am Rübenberge is currently closed, as Deutsche Bahn announced on Twitter. All trains are canceled or delayed. The closure is expected to last until 10 a.m. A replacement bus service has been set up.
