According to their own statements, activists from the environmental protection group “Extinction Rebellion” dismantled signs on various motorways on Monday night – including in the Berlin-Brandenburg area. The spokesman Florian Zander confirmed the daily mirror.

The group posted videos of the action as part of their “Spring Rebellion” on Twitter. You can see how someone pulls a sign for lifting the speed limit out of the ground and places it behind the guardrail in the dark.

Zander did not say exactly where the actions took place, because: “The activists want the signs to remain removed for as long as possible,” he explained. When asked, the Berlin police were initially not aware of any such action.

Zander left open what actions could still be expected on Tuesday – the last day of the “Spring Rebellions” week. It is also conceivable, he indicated, that such signs could also be used in the city center, “for example to extend the 30 km/h zones”.

In the past few months, activists have been unscrewing signs that lift a speed limit – “to point out the simple implementation of the speed limit,” according to a statement from March.

After their protests in Berlin over the past few days, the group sees support from the population. “Due to the lack of government action, we are seeing more and more people joining our protest,” the group said on Monday. There is also no split in the climate movement. “The forms of action of different movements such as Fridays For Future, Last Generation or Extinction Rebellion do not contradict each other,” it said. “Civil disobedience is morally and strategically important and right.”

In the past few days, Extinction Rebellion had drawn attention to the loss of species and the climate crisis with actions in Berlin. Among other things, activists dumped oil-like black paint on buildings. Dozens of people were temporarily arrested on suspicion of property damage and other crimes.

The Last Generation group is planning their own protests this week. It’s known for roadblocks with activists taped to it. Last week, a spokeswoman for the Fridays for Future movement was critical of the forms of protest by the “last generation”. Fridays for Future is also planning an action for this week with a view to the FDP federal party conference in Berlin. (with dpa)
