Alberto Fernández and German Chancellor Scholz coincided within the framework of their meeting, in enhance cooperation on energy matters and condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, by offering a joint statement at the Palacio San Martín.

The German president is on a tour of South America that includes activities in Brazil and Chile. “We have had a very good bilateral talk where we raised the concerns that we both have about the things that are happening in the world such as the Russian invasion of Ukrainian territory and its negative consequences for the world,” Fernández pointed out at the beginning of the press conference.

And in this regard, he added: “The chancellor has invited me to participate in the initiative of the climate club knowing that the climate problem is suffered by the world. We are absolutely willing to accompany the initiative.” For his part, Scholz assured that he is “interested in having close cooperation with Argentina in energy matters” and assured that both countries should cooperate on “climate change.”

The German chancellor indicated that his country aspires to maintain a “constructive spirit” in the negotiations between the European Union and Mercosur. For his part, Fernández affirmed that with the arrival of Inacio Lula Da Silva as president of Brazil, the Mercosur regional bloc will be in “better conditions” to negotiate with Europe.

“Trade relations between the EU and Mercosur must be good and the negotiations are already longstanding. That is why it is important to have a constructive spirit and work side by side so that the negotiations come to fruition. The most important thing is that they happen soon,” Scholz said.

Finally, both rulers condemned the warfare taking place in Ukraine and Russia’s invasion of that country, and Fernández asserted that Argentina “does not intend to send weapons” to the conflict zone.
