American rapper Wiz Khalifa charged with illegal drug possession in Romania

BUCHAREST.- He rapper American Wiz Khalifa was charged with illegal drug possession after performing at a festival on the coast of Rumaniawhere he allegedly consumed cannabis on stage, prosecutors said Sunday.

The hip hop star, headliner of the “Beach, Please!” festival in the Romanian town of Costinesti, on the Black Sea coast, was arrested with the drug on Sunday morning, according to the same source.

Cannabis is considered a “risk drug” in Romania and possession is punishable by up to ten years in prison.

Videos posted on social media show the rapper being escorted out of the venue by Romanian authorities.

“During a performance at a music festival held in the Costinesti resort, the accused was found to be in possession of more than 18 grams of cannabis and consumed (on stage) another amount (…) in the form of a hand-rolled cigarette,” Romanian prosecutors in charge of combating organised crime (DIICOT) said in a statement on Sunday.

A source close to the investigation confirmed to AFP that Wiz Khalifa, along with others, had been brought in for questioning on Sunday morning.

The rapper has been charged but no arrest warrant has been issued, he added.

The investigation into the musician is ongoing, according to prosecutors.

In a post on social media site X, the rapper said he did not mean to “disrespect” Romania by smoking on stage.

“They were very respectful and let me go. I’ll be back soon. But without a huge joint next time,” he added.

Wiz Khalifa frequently references marijuana in his songs and has been involved in funding legal cannabis businesses in the United States.
