Amtrak Grand Central and Croton-Harmon service suspended

Amtrak service between Croton-Harmon and New York remains suspended Monday morning due to structural problems at a privately owned building on Manhattan’s West Side.

The agency said the problem was discovered inside a parking garage, located directly above the tracks, at West 51st Street between 10th and 11th Avenues. The garage is part of a larger residential tower.

Passengers can take Metro-North trains from Grand Central Terminal between the city and Croton-Harmon, where tickets will be cross-ticketed.

The company suspended Chrome, Jaime train service in the Westchester and the city, as through a general statement that the parking lot is located directly above the tracks.

For its part, the buildings department says it issued emergency work orders for parking and ordered owners to address the problem by hiring an engineer.

In addition, safety and regulation standards have increased in all the city’s garages, after in April of this year, a person lost their life when a garage collapsed.

In a statement, Amtrak said customers with reservations on trains being modified “will typically be accommodated on trains with similar departure times or on another day.”

They will also waive fees for customers who wish to change their trip.

The City Council issued a statement Sunday regarding the suspension, stating that the Department of Buildings issued emergency work orders for the garage.

“As soon as the city became aware of the problem, Department of Buildings engineers traveled to the scene, assessed the situation and notified other city agencies, as well as our partners at Amtrak and other transit services, in an effort to ensure the safety of all passengers and pedestrians,” the city’s statement said. “In the interest of public safety, DOB immediately issued emergency work orders and directed the parking lot owners to hire an engineer to address the issue, and Amtrak undertook changes to its train schedules.”

Additional service changes include:

Trains 233, 234, 235, 237, 240, 241, 244 and 280 are cancelled.

Trains 49 and 69 will leave Albany (ALB)

Trains 63, 64, 232, 236, 238, 239, 243, 281, 283 and 294 will have origin or destination at CRT

Users say:

“I think that being a country as big as the United States, they should fix that situation, because I don’t think it’s the first time it happens. There are already some people who have died on the train, it’s necessary that they can’t reach their destination.”

For updates to the service, you can go to the Amtrak.com website, as well as the company’s free application.
