Andrea Gordillo: second district Council candidate

Andrea Gordillo, president of Manhattan Community Board 3 and local leader of a non-profit organization, went to the Pura Política studios to talk about her campaign to succeed Carlina Rivera as Councilor for District 2 of the municipality.

The district, which encompasses the Lower East Side and East Village as well as Flatiron, Gramercy Park, Rose Hill, Kips Bay and Murray Hill, has long been represented by a Latina woman.

Rivera concludes her last term on the Council in 2025, without the possibility of being re-elected again.

The daughter of Peruvian immigrants, Gordillo has lived in the Lower East Side and East Village for more than a decade.

“I took the plunge because the Lower East Side has been my home for more than ten years and I saw in my neighbors many of the challenges and struggles that my parents left behind when they arrived in this country almost 40 years ago, such as the language barriers, the differences cultural, economic difficulties, that motivated me to get more involved in my community. One of my first jobs here in the neighborhood was at Loisaida Cultural Center where I met and learned the legacy of community activists.”assured the candidate.

Among the problems facing the district and the city, in Gordillo’s opinion, one of the central ones is the affordable housing crisis.

“I am proud because my neighbors have managed to secure and protect affordable housing, we have enough rent-stabilized apartments and I am committed to protecting that. But we also have a serious crisis of affordable housing throughout the city and that affects middle and working class people.”said.

Gordillo has been very active since the community meeting to prevent the closure of Beth Israel Mount Sinai hospital.

As a descendant of immigrants, Gordillo said that the relocation center for asylum seekers in the East Village is an example of a great effort by municipal authorities to receive migrants with the dignity they deserve, but that the reality is that the federal government has to take action.

“In my entire life, almost 40 years, we have never had significant immigration reform, but it is also about having a very collaborative person and making coalitions to fight and win what we need: a resilient city”Gordillo added.
