ROMA.- Angelina Jolie, Lady Gaga, Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Nicole Kidman are among the stars who will be present from August 28 to September 7 at the 81st Venice Film Festivalwhose programming was presented this Tuesday.

Twenty films will compete for the prestigious Golden Lion for Best Film, announced the artistic director of the exhibitionAlberto Barbera, during a presentation broadcast live on the internet.

Among the most anticipated films is Todd Phillips’ “Joker: Folie Deux,” the second installment of the “Joker” series, which will also star Joaquin Phoenix, this time accompanied by Lady Gaga.

The new feature film by the Spanish director Pedro Almodávar, “La habitacin de al lado”, shot in English in New York and featuring Tilda Swinton, Julianne Moore and John Turturro in the cast, will also compete for the coveted award.

This edition of the Mostra will also mark the return of Brazilian director Walter Salles, twelve years after his last film, with “I’m still here” (“Ainda Estou Aqui”), based on a book that tells the true story of a woman searching for her husband, a congressman kidnapped by the Brazilian military during the dictatorship.

Another important event of the festival will be the presentation of “Maria”, in which Angelina Jolie plays the famous singer Maria Callas during the last days of her life in Paris.

George Clooney and Brad Pitt will also be raising eyebrows on the Lido, but out of competition, with “Wolfs” by Jon Watts.

Australian star Nicole Kidman stars in “Babygirl,” an erotic thriller by Halina Reijn about a woman dissatisfied with her marital relationship who embarks on a dangerous sadomasochistic relationship.

British actor Jude Law will star in “The Order,” directed by Australian director Justin Kurzel, in which he plays an FBI agent immersed in the white supremacist circles of the 1980s.

The festival will also screen three French films, including “Jouer avec le feu”, the third work by sisters Delphine and Muriel Coulin, starring Vincent Lindon and Benjamin Voisin; and five Italian films in competition, including “Queer”, the latest film by Luca Guadagnino (“Call me by your name”), starring Daniel Craig.
